A wound dressing shields the wound from the external environment and provides the optimal conditions for wound healing. It can be defined as:
Using the most suitable wound dressings for different stages of the healing process is a key factor in minimising recovery time and reducing infection risk.
Modern wound dressings are made from a wide range of materials, including gauze, foam, transparent film, alginates, composites, hydrocolloids and hydrogels. Their functions include moisture management (absorbency), infection control (antimicrobial), bleeding control (haemostatic), skin-closure, debridement and odour control.
We stock many of the most commonly used wound dressings in clinical practice, including:
Flexible, ultra-thin translucent film dressings are made of polymeric, breathable materials. These act as a barrier to external microorganisms and liquids, while allowing moisture-vapour transpiration to create a moist environment for the wound, which promotes healing. They also enable continuous wound monitoring without having to remove the dressing. The BNF recommends transparent film dressings for catheter sites and partial-thickness wounds with eschar or minimal exudate.
These highly absorbent dressings apply pressure to a wound site to staunch blood loss and prevent further bleeding.
Designed to cover puncture wounds resulting from injections or cannulation, these are usually supplied pre-cut to size. They include IV fixation dressings, which often feature a deep U-shaped notch to create a tight seal around the catheter site.
These offer high absorbency without sticking to the wound, and high permeability to reduce the risk of maceration while encouraging wound healing.
Pre-cut plasters made out of fabric or composites, these are used to protect minor cuts, blisters and abrasions.
An alternative to sutures or staples, these are ideal for closing deep cuts, lacerations and surgical incisions. Compared to the more traditional invasive techniques, they offer greater edge-to-edge accuracy, reduced risk of scarring and more patient comfort. They also increase the tensile strength of the wound site, which helps to stem bleeding and guard against dehiscence (wound separation).
These include sterile, permeable patches to promote injury or post-operative healing, as well as orthoptic eye patches for occlusion therapy in children with amblyopia (lazy eye).
