Diagnostic instruments help medical professionals observe and measure many aspects of patient health quickly and efficiently, from blood pressure and heart rate to body temperature. Coupled with assessment of symptoms, history and lab tests where appropriate, this enables a diagnosis to be made.
Diagnostic tools range from specialist imaging equipment such as CT scanners, ECG machines and ultrasound devices to the more portable items – including stethoscopes, sphygmomanometers and examination lights – typically found in a wide range of healthcare settings, from nurses’ bags and GP surgeries to emergency units, general wards and care homes. There’s also been a significant increase in recent years in domestic use of diagnostic tools, either by patients participating in telehealth programmes from home or by people who simply want to keep an eye on their own health.
Available as both reusables and disposables, these small pen-style torches enable detailed examination of small areas by narrowly focusing the beam of light. They are used to check general eye health and pupillary response – both of which can indicate a range of health conditions – and are also handy for examining ears, throats and injuries.
The ophthalmoscope has an illuminated, adjustable-focus viewing aperture for detailed examination of the fundus (the back of the eye – including the retina, optic nerve, macula, fovea and blood vessels). This can enable identification of eye conditions such as glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, bacterial infection and detached retina, as well as systemic disorders, including hypertension, diabetes and multiple sclerosis.
Combining a bright light and a magnifying lens, the otoscope allows detailed examination of the outer ear canal and tympanic membrane, enabling assessment of ear health and investigation of hearing loss, pain, dizziness and discharge. It’s used to help diagnose ear infections (otitis media) and conditions such as tinnitus, Meniere’s disease and tympanic-membrane perforation.
A fingertip pulse oximeter is a non-invasive diagnostic tool used for measuring oxygen saturation (SpO2) in the blood. It’s particularly useful in emergency situations and in any settings where hypoxemia may be a risk, including operating theatres and post-op recovery rooms, and with patients who are dealing with chronic conditions at home.
The sphygmomanometer or blood-pressure monitor records arterial blood pressure, which is an essential biomarker for overall health. There are several types, with digital and aneroid (mercury-free) being the most common, and they can flag up the existence of disorders such as hypertension, arterial hardening, and diabetes.
Probably the most well-known of all medical tools, the stethoscope is used primarily to assess heart and lung sounds (for example, for suspected pneumonia, bronchitis or heart disease). It also plays a key role in manual blood-pressure measurement, enabling more accurate readings to be taken (during cuff deflation, the point at which the first heartbeat is heard is the systolic pressure, while the diastolic is the point at which the heartbeat sound is no longer heard).
Waist, hips, neck, chest, thigh circumference and a range of other measurements can be taken with a body tape measure to help with the diagnosis of specific conditions and subsequent treatment procedures.
Ubiquitous throughout the healthcare sector, thermometers enable measurement of core body temperature, one of the key vital signs. Several different types are available, from stick styles for oral, rectal and axillary use, to ear thermometers and non-contact infrared for distanced readings, which have become more popular during the pandemic.
