Frequently asked questions

How do I dispose of medical syringes?
Used medical syringes should always be placed in a proper sharps container to prevent injury and contamination. These containers are usually supplied by pharmacies, healthcare providers, or local councils. Once full, the container must be sealed and returned through an approved collection service or drop off point. Never put syringes in household bins or recycling, as this creates a risk for anyone handling the waste. If you are unsure, contact your GP surgery or council for advice on local disposal services.
What is a medical syringe driver?
A medical syringe driver is a small device that delivers medication slowly and steadily over a set period of time. It is often used when a patient cannot swallow tablets or needs continuous pain relief. The syringe sits inside the driver, and the machine pushes the medication through a thin tube into the body. Syringe drivers are commonly used in hospitals, hospices, and at home to keep symptoms under control in a safe and reliable way.
Who invented the medical syringe?
The modern medical syringe is linked to two key inventors in the nineteenth century. Charles Pravaz from France and Alexander Wood from Scotland each developed early versions of the hypodermic syringe in the 1850s. Their designs allowed doctors to inject medicines directly into the body with far greater accuracy. Although syringes have continued to evolve, the work of Pravaz and Wood laid the foundation for the devices used today.
Can you take medical syringes on a plane?
You can take medical syringes on a plane if you need them for health reasons, but you must follow airline and airport rules. It is best to carry a letter from your doctor confirming that the syringes are required for medical use. Keep them in your hand luggage along with any medication so they are easy to show during security checks. Used sharps should be placed in a travel sharps container. Always check the airline guidelines before travelling to avoid delays.
Which is bigger, a 22 or 23 gauge needle?
A 22 gauge needle is bigger than a 23 gauge needle. Needle gauge numbers work in reverse, so a lower number means a wider needle. In practical use, a 22 gauge needle allows a slightly faster flow of fluid compared with a 23 gauge needle, although both sizes are common in medical settings.

How are NHS supply chain supplies sourced?

Medical devices are required to carry ‘Unique Device Identification’ (UDI) compliant barcode labels, which will carry scannable information relating to the production of the device, for example the expiry date and the serial or lot number.

How are your needles sterilised?

Sterilisation is by a fully validated gamma irradiation process. Supplied with a consolidated certificate of conformity. Packed in an easy-tear, quad laminate pouches. Pouches are VHP and alcohol impermeable making them suitable for most transfer processes.

Why is needle length important?

Standard needles vary in length from ⅜” to 3 ½”.  The length of the needle required is determined by its intended use. Different length needles are used for different areas and types of administration.  Using the wrong needle length could result in poor administration and absorption of medication or damage the patient’s tissue and muscles resulting in bruising or bleeding.
