Frequently asked questions

How are medical needles made?
Medical needles are manufactured through a detailed process that ensures strength, cleanliness and accuracy. Production begins with long stainless steel tubes that are drawn out into thinner sections until they reach the required diameter. These tubes are then cut into short pieces and ground into a sharp point using precision machinery. The surface is polished to reduce friction and improve patient comfort. After shaping, the needles are cleaned, sterilised and attached to their plastic hubs before being packaged in sterile conditions. Every step is tested carefully to meet strict medical standards.
How do I dispose of medical needles?
Used medical needles must be disposed of safely to protect people and the environment. They should always be placed in an approved sharps container as soon as they have been used. These containers are puncture resistant and clearly labelled. Once the container is full, it should be sealed and returned to a pharmacy, healthcare provider or local council collection point. Never throw needles in household bins or recycling. Proper disposal prevents injuries and reduces the risk of infection.
What are medical needles made of?
Most medical needles are made from high grade stainless steel, chosen for its strength, resistance to corrosion and ability to stay sharp. The steel is formed into a fine hollow tube called a cannula. The hub, which connects the needle to a syringe or medical device, is usually made from strong medical plastic. Together, these materials create a sterile tool that can be used safely for injections, blood collection and other clinical procedures.
When was the medical needle invented?
The modern medical needle was developed in the early 1850s. Alexander Wood in Scotland and Charles Pravaz in France both created early versions of the hypodermic needle during this time. Their designs allowed medicines to be delivered directly into the body, laying the foundation for the injection techniques used in healthcare today.
What size is the finest medical needle?
The finest commonly used medical needles are around 33 to 34 gauge. The higher the gauge number, the thinner the needle. These ultra fine needles are often used for delicate procedures such as insulin injections or cosmetic treatments because they minimise discomfort. Healthcare professionals choose the exact gauge based on the treatment and the needs of the patient.

How are NHS supply chain supplies sourced?

Medical devices are required to carry ‘Unique Device Identification’ (UDI) compliant barcode labels, which will carry scannable information relating to the production of the device, for example the expiry date and the serial or lot number.

How are your needles sterilised?

Sterilisation is by a fully validated gamma irradiation process. Supplied with a consolidated certificate of conformity. Packed in an easy-tear, quad laminate pouches. Pouches are VHP and alcohol impermeable making them suitable for most transfer processes.

Why is needle length important?

Standard needles vary in length from ⅜” to 3 ½”.  The length of the needle required is determined by its intended use. Different length needles are used for different areas and types of administration.  Using the wrong needle length could result in poor administration and absorption of medication or damage the patient’s tissue and muscles resulting in bruising or bleeding.
