Frequently asked questions

What are medical bandages made of?
Medical bandages are made from a range of materials depending on their purpose. Many are created from cotton because it is soft, breathable and gentle on the skin. Elasticated bandages often contain a mix of cotton and synthetic fibres that allow them to stretch and provide support. Some bandages are made from gauze, which is a light woven fabric used for dressing wounds. Others use specialised materials that help absorb moisture or keep the area clean. Every type is designed to protect the skin and support healing.
What does bandage mean in medical terms?
In medical terms, a bandage is a strip of fabric used to support, secure or protect part of the body. It can be used to hold a dressing in place, apply pressure to reduce swelling or provide gentle support to an injured joint or muscle. Bandages are a basic but important part of first aid and clinical care.
What is the medical term for bandage?
The medical term that most closely matches the word bandage is dressing or compression wrap, depending on how it is used. A dressing is placed directly on a wound to protect it, while a bandage is often used to hold that dressing in place. In some settings, clinicians refer to bandages as wraps, slings or supports based on their specific function.
When should I not use a compression bandage?
A compression bandage should not be used if there is a suspected broken bone, severe circulation problems or signs of infection in the area. It should also be avoided if the person has numbness, tingling or increased pain after the bandage is applied. Compression is designed to reduce swelling, but if it is too tight or used incorrectly it can restrict blood flow. If you are unsure, seek medical advice before applying one.
Which wounds should not be covered?
Most wounds heal better when covered, but there are a few exceptions. Very minor cuts or scrapes that are clean and dry may not need a dressing if they are not at risk of rubbing on clothing or becoming dirty. Wounds that are already showing signs of infection, such as heavy discharge or a foul smell, should be assessed by a medical professional before being covered. Any wound that continues to bleed heavily should not be bandaged without proper first aid, as pressure and medical help are needed.

Our Range Of Medical And Pressure Bandages.

Our carefully selected range of 3M Healthcare bandages encompasses both Medical and Pressure Bandages that offer healthcare professionals the very best options when it comes to caring for their patients.

Medical Bandages (Also Known As Steri-Strips)

Typically used for cuts or wounds that aren’t too severe, or for minor surgery, our range of medical bandages, also known as steri-strips, can help seal wounds by pulling the two sides of the skin together without making any contact with the actual wound. This reduces the chance of introducing any bacteria or other substances into the cut.

Pressure Bandages

Designed to apply pressure to a particular area of the body, pressure bandages typically have no adhesive and are applied over a wound that’s been covered with an absorbent layer. The absorbent layer may or may not be held in place with an adhesive. Pressure bandages are used to control bleeding and encourage blood clotting without constricting normal blood circulation.

FAQS.

Are Steri-strips better than stitches?

Steri-Strips are sometimes a better option than regular stitches because they don’t need to be sewn into the skin and can be easily removed when the wound heals.
